In 1923 Herbert Bayer (still a student) was commissioned by the State Bank of Thuringia to design some bank notes. These clear measured designs turned out to be as ephemeral as his playful party invitations. German currency was at its nadir and his notes for denominations of one million, two million and two billion marks, were drastically devalued even before the ink was dry.
