Typography became an important discipline at Dessau, and two terms of the preliminary course were devoted to it. As in other areas of design the goal was to return to first principles, and to reassess typography rationaly in terms of effective communication. Several attempts were made at designing new typefaces, aiming for improved legibility.
One of the best known new typefaces which Herbert Bayer designed in 1925-27 was called "Universal." It represents an attempt to construct a sans serif typeface on consistent principles. It was in fact rarely used, except in exhibition displays.
